I am coming to the end of two years of study at the National Art School in Sydney, Australia. Making art in the university context forces you to focus your work around an understandable concept. Personally, I was also constantly justifying and contextualizing my work in relation to the contemporary art world verbally in critiques and in written form too.

I have found this to be helpful and harmful to making art.

As a reaction to all this academic rigor, and because there was a stack of them next to my desk in my studio, I began cutting into late 70s National Geographic magazines.

I began this project in July, 2011, sending a postcard and instructions to 42 friends willing to participate. I have received back 25 postcards. I asked musician friends to describe a particular moment when they experienced a sense of unison, connection or communion with others playing music. Of course, these moments are ephemeral, fleeting and hard to describe, especially on a postcard. The results are varied, clever, profound, confusing and brief.

I will upload all the responses in alphabetical order. The first one is mine.

Not everyday does life imitate Fawlty Towers. But just the other day I was setting up an artwork in my studio. Picture below

I left it and was working on another drawing when I bumped the bookcase on the right. The moose was dislodged and slowly began its descent. Tomahawk chopped the tennis racket splintering one of the moose's antlers with a crash. I got it on video. You can watch it here.

I recently finished Crowd (a family portrait). It consists of an oil on linen painting, a laptop opened to the interactive site fancam.com and a pair of headphones playing the radio broadcast of a football game. These are some images of the painting in process.

Around the World

Around the World is a participatory performance artwork involving a basketball game, a gallery and a lot of people. The following images document a version of Around the World that took place on August 20, 2011 at the National Art School for The Big Draw 2011. Gabby and Rachel assisted me in teaching and playing the game with members of the public. From 10am-2pm we played the game with around 50 participants including friends and strangers. After every shot, the shooter put a sticker where the ball landed. A drawing of red, white, black and silver dots gradually emerged on the gray floor.

The following text is was on a flier in the gallery for people to read during the performance.

I grew up in Indiana, where basketball is not only the most popular sport, but an ingrained part of life. Friday night high school games are an embedded weekly ritual for towns across the state. Growing up, everyone played basketball on outdoor playground courts until the snow forced the game indoors from December to March.

Living in Australia, much of pop culture is transported from the USA. So the American way
of life, though foreign, is strangely familiar here. By taking part in this game, you are participating in a bit of local Midwest American culture, plonked into a very different context. The game is a playful way to discuss the invasion of pop culture and our passive consumption of it.

Backyard Listening Project

Last year I created this drawing project that ran at the National Art School for The Big Draw. People sat down and listened to an audio description of a backyard scene. Then, they drew a picture from the description. They pinned their drawing in the adjacent room to a wall that filled with drawings over the afternoon. In the middle of all the drawings was the original photograph underneath a sheet of paper, which they could lift up to reveal the image. The following are the audio files. Feel free to give it a try.

The Festival of Saint Philips

Saturday night was the opening of the inaugural art exhibition at Saint Philips Anglican Church. Plenty of people came to view works by seven artists in that tremendous space. My work, entitled "in the recovery of our union with our brothers" composed of kneeling pillows used weekly by the congregation. The work took the form of a stack Saturday night, and was dismantled in order for its use by church goers on Sunday morning. Sunday night it took the form of a path down the side aisle. A zine accompanied the work and informed the intention of the work. The photographs below were taken by my friend Jasper Lee.

Saturday Music/Art Festival 'Was I There In Your Future'

Five bands, three artists, and five hundred odd people transformed The Factory Theatre in Marrickville into a festival last Saturday. Was I There in Your Future staged an eclectic line-up of music from We Say Bombalee, Ye Denver Birds, Otouto, Djanimals and headlined by Cloud Control. I took part in the event as one of the artists involved assisted by my friends and fellow artists Jeff, Matt, and (wife) Kate. We had a fantastic day, met some great people, ate delicious burritos, made up new dances, and witnessed no major collapses of the artwork. I produced three separate works out of corrugated cardboard and acrylic paint. We’re getting the band back together consisted of five band members (one from each of the bands playing). As you can see from the pictures below, the work occupied “the main stage” for an all-night performance. Xmas tree (o xmas tree) involved a cardboard Christmas tree underneath which participants placed a drawing of the present they wanted most. Travel Highlights allowed participants to chart their journey to the festival on an oversized map of Sydney. Thanks to Cloud Control for inviting me to come along and make art!

Mega Mix Collaboration

A while back I asked some friends if they wanted to participate in a bit of mail art. I sent them a mix cd of songs and a drawing. They returned a mix and drawing of their own. I have sent 25 packages out and have received 10 back so far. Some may have been lost in the mail, and some of my friends may be slackers. Those who participated made some incredible drawings that are pinned to the drawing board next to my desk in my studio. I appreciate your contribution!

The following drawings are part of a project exploring the link between listening and visual creativity. An image was sent to a person who verbally explained what they saw to the artist who drew a picture from the explanation. They then sent the drawing to the next person on the list. Each explanation was recorded. The project resulted in 5 visual and 4 audio drawings. If I can figure out how to upload the audio, then you can listen and attempt to draw a picture from what you hear.

Yesterday I was grocery shopping and the girl at the counter told me to have a good afternoon. I mumbled happy thanksgiving back and walked out of the Coffs Plaza past hundreds of people going about their normal Thursday routine. I felt the weight of a country, a continent crushing me like a really fat man oblivious of the emergency cupcake in his back pocket.

I designed this poster yesterday in anticipation for our trip to Melbourne.
